Humppack whale Sydney

Every year, thousands of humpback whales migrate along the New South Wales coastline, making Sydney one of the best places in Australia to capture breathtaking drone footage. So the whale watching season begins!

Maroubra Beach – One of Sydney's Best Whale Watching Locations

Maroubra Beach, particularly around Mahon Pool, is one of the most accessible locations to spot humpback whales from shore. During the migration season, it's common to see whales passing close to the coastline, offering fantastic opportunities for drone photography and videography.

Important: Shark Surveillance Drones

Shark surveillance operating hours:

  • Daily from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM

  • Drone patrols cover Maroubra Beach and nearby beaches including Bondi and Tamarama.

If shark surveillance drones are operating, always maintain a safe distance and avoid interfering with emergency or government drone operations.

Fly Responsibly

Before every flight, make sure you follow the CASA Standard Drone Rules for recreational drone pilots. These rules are designed to keep everyone safe and help protect access to popular flying locations.

Why We Recommend Maroubra

Maroubra is one of the easiest and most accessible places around Sydney to capture humpback whale footage. With easy parking, coastal walking tracks, and excellent whale viewing opportunities, it's a fantastic location for both beginner and experienced drone pilots.

Before you fly, always check current airspace restrictions and local conditions.
